January 15, 2009

Dear Alyssa,
You were born on December 27, 2008 at 9:39 pm. You were 8 lbs 11 oz and 20 inches long. You were born just 2 days after Christmas. What a wonderful Christmas present! Grandma and Grandpa Mackley came up from St. George to stay with us and to watch the girls when we went into the hospital. On the morning of the 27th I woke up at 5:30 am to call the hospital. They told me that I was their only induction that day but that several Mom's had come in during the night to have their babies, so they would call me when they could get us in a room. So Daddy and I went back to bed. When we got up, we showered and ate breakfast and at around 11:00 am I started getting really anxious. At around 12:00 I made your sisters lunch and decided that i was going to eat to. Your Dad thought that I shouldn't but I did anyway! After lunch I called the hospital again and told them that your dad and I wanted to go to the store and did we have enough time, the nurse said that we probably did and reassured me that I was first on their list and that they would be calling me in the next couple of hours. Your Dad was sick of waiting around so he decided he wanted to go to Home Depot and pick up a few things. Upon leaving we decided to take our hospital gear just in case. It's a good thing that we did! When we left the house I was talking on the phone to your Aunt Jana and she was starting to tell me about a dream that she had had, and my phone beeped, I looked at it and the hospital was calling! We weren't even two blocks from the house! They said that they were ready for us and I told them that we were already on our way. When I got back on the phone with Aunt Jana I told her and she was so excited. She told me that I had to call her when I had you because in her dream I had had you and you had blue eyes. I told her that it probably only meant that she was supposed to have another baby because there was no way I would have a blue eyed baby.
When we got to the hospital they checked us in and took us to a room. When the nurse tried to get a needle my arm to start an IV she couldn't so she called the nurse supervisor in and she told her to try one more time. When the nurse still couldn't get it in a vein her supervisor tried twice and couldn't. So the brought in the head honcho nurse and she couldn't either! So they had to call in the anesthesiologist Dr. Robinson. He finally got on started on the side of my left wrist, and every time I would move my wrist the tubing would slide in and out. But at least they got it, Right?! After they got my IV going and all of the blood drawn that they needed, Dr. Robinson asked me if I wanted an epidural right then but I told him I wanted to wait for a bit. A few hours later and I felt like NOTHING was happening. I looked over at the pitosin drip and I was still only at a level 4, which is pretty much nothing on a scale from 2-20. So I asked the nurse if she could up it. She did,.. to a 6. So the next time she came in I asked her why they were taking it so slow. She said that my Doctor wouldn't be able to come in till around 6, so there was no reason to rush things. Poohy. A while later I started feeling some pretty strong contractions so I told Daddy to get the nurse. When she came in I told her that I would like the epidural as soon as possible, so she went to find the anesthesiologist. When he came in and gave it to me I felt much better. For a minute. 15 minutes after the nurse came in to help me turn onto my right side and, oh my! It hurt so bad. Every time they would try and turn me on to my right side, same thing, shooting pains in my stomach, so they started rotating me from my back to my left side. At about 6:00 pm Dr. Blackett came in to see how I was doing and to break my water. (By this time I think my pitosin was about a 12.) She asked me how long it usually took after my water broke ans I told her that with Hailey, it had only taken 3 hours. So she told us she'd come back in and check on me between 9 and 9:30 pm. At about 8:30 the nurse came in and checked me. I was only dilated to a 6 but she asked if I could feel any pressure because I was 100% effaced. I told her no and she said that she'd be back around 9:00 pm to check me again. At about 8:45 I told Daddy that I thought maybe I could feel pressure, and maybe I couldn't before because I had an epidural and wasn't really thinking about it, because by this time, my legs were numb but my belly wasn't. I could feel all of the contractions. So Daddy went and got the nurse and when she came in and checked me at about 9:00 she said that I was complete. I looked at her and said 'what?' She said 'Your complete. You're dilated to a 10!' Boy were we excited! So she called Dr. Blackett and when she got to the hospital we started pushing. She asked if I wanted to us a mirror so I could watch and I told her yes because I have never done this before. It was so neat. I could see your little head start to push forward and then when I would stop pushing, it would move back in a little. I have to tell you it was the weirdest thing I've ever watched. I knew it was my body your head was moving through, but I couldn't feel it. Then all of a sudden your head was out and you turned and we could see your cute little face! Our sweet little Alyssa May was born. At 9:39 pm. In a snowy Saturday night. And guess what?! When I looked at your sweet little face and you peeked up at me, I said to Daddy, 'She has blue eyes!' He didn't believe it so he came over to see for him self, then he picked up the phone and called Aunt Jana. She said she told us so!
